Measurement System Analysis (MSA)
Measurement systems are used every day in manufacturing, research and development, and sales and marketing. Often measurements are made with little regard for the quality of such measurements. Yet all too often, the measurements are not representative of the true value of the characteristic being measured. That might be because the measurement system is not accurate enough, not precise enough, introduces bias into the measurement, or is not properly
being used by the operator.
Quality System Standards such as QS 9000/ ISO/ TS/ 16949, demand that analysis of measuring process variations is required & they also demand ensuring of control on monitoring & measuring devices. Finally, it helps to have proper
control on the Overall Process, by way of Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
There are five parameters to investigate in an MSA: bias, linearity, stability, repeatability and reproducibility. A general rule for measurement system acceptability is:-
Under 10% is acceptable.
10% to 30% error suggests that the system is acceptable depending on the importance of application, cost of measurement device, cost of repair, and other factors.
Over 30% error is considered unacceptable, and you should improve the measurement system.
MSA is perceived to be a daunting task due to the involved statistical calculations that go with it. Much too often, we have come across questions from harrowed quality managers!
We offer a variety of Consulting Services which may be coordinated with our Training Courses. Our MSA Consulting is a great follow-up to our MSA Training Course.
Our MSA Consulting Services are the best way to target your specific needs, as we work closely with your staff to find out exactly what you need. We can help you to solve specific problems, or we can help you to develop standardized procedures and implement systems to improve how you do business.
Our experience encompasses work with companies in many industries. These include large corporations, small companies, OEMs, Consulting Firms, and many others.
Our MSA Consulting and Training Services include the following:-
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) defined procedures for evaluating measurement systems and test methods.
- ASTM International (ASTM), defined procedures for evaluating measurement systems and test methods.
- Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), defined measurement system analysis, which is part of the following inter-related analysis:-
▪The FMEA and Control Plan
▪The Statistical Process Control (SPC)
▪ The Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
